Barbara Ketchum – Taking Action Through Advocacy to Preserve Our River

“Step lightly upon the earth; she is God’s body.” This quote is at the heart of Barbara Ketchum’s passion for preserving our river and natural resources.

As a volunteer and board member of St. Johns Riverkeeper, Barbara has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to preserving the St. Johns River.  She was inspired to get involved following the widespread algae blooms that blanketed our river during the summer of 2005.

She played a critical role in the development of Riverkeeper’s River Friendly Yards program and the production of its award-winning documentary, The Green Monster, which raised awareness and educated businesses and homeowners about ways to reduce our negative impact on the health of the river.

Barbara also helped develop a second documentary, Revenge of the River, and has worked on many fundraising campaigns. In 2009, she formed the Water Policy Group bringing community and business leaders together to promote water conservation and advocate for policies to protect our water resources. Her commitment, passion and effective volunteer service are resulting in better protections for our water resources, a cleaner and healthier St. Johns River, and a more sustainable future for our children.

Barbara received the HandsOn Earth Award at this year’s Celebrate!GOOD for her extraordinary efforts to preserve our river.
