Shigeko Sams – A Senior Volunteer Working Tirelessly to Improve Our Community

SamsShigeko Sams has been an active volunteer in the Jacksonville community for many years, spreading her time between St. John’s Cathedral, Seniors on a Mission, RSVP of Jacksonville and the Sulzbacher Center. Shigeko has provided a variety of services throughout her time as a volunteer that range from preparing meals for the homeless to administrative support in nonprofit offices.

Sams_thanksgiving 009Every month, Shigeko volunteers with St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral to prep, cook and serve a hot meal for residents at the Sulzbacher Center. Shigeko also takes this volunteer project one step further by arranging an annual food donation drive at a local country club.

Shigeko’s administrative volunteer work has included a range of office activities such as bulk mailing and preparations for special events that support nonprofits throughout the year. She also increases the impact of her volunteer hours by advocating in the community and recruiting other community members to get involved and serve in their neighborhoods. Shigeko is receiving the HandsOn Young at Heart Award at Celebrate!GOOD 2014.
